Things I have learned when building Byleth's Kid

I have recently posted regarding my pleasure with Mr. Byleth's Kid, my fire mage. During the adventure of getting my newest "kid" to niobium I have gained much wisdom and would love to share it with those interested.

1. ALWAYS ride! For reasons that will be obvious in a bit (pun intended).

2. If an item says "split", it will! So, you must make "split" your newest motto. Even flameskin begins the split, so never stand still. Riding a horse grants you much mobility and speed, so RIDE!

3. Saddles matter. Most have resistances that you can use for different areas (i.e. poison in Zurag Nar, fire/magic in VOT, etc.) Yes, they're hard to hang on to, but worth the hastle. Besides that, Henry looks better in a saddle, keep him happy.

4. Burning bone, the benefit of a Byleth's set, does NOT leach but it will begin the split process. It sure does make the critters "see red". And is a great source of entertainment.

5. Ghost Meadow is NOT a haunted valley somewhere in UnderWorld. Get it high with items you can slot so that when you cast it it's gonna provide much aid in casting those rings of fire.

6. Stone Skin is NOT bad for your complection, so keep it high with items as well.

7. Mentors do not have caloric value, so drink drink drink...sorry Blackblood, no alcohol in 'em either.

8. Purgatory is great for archers, they just stand there leaching while you take care of more important business at hand.

9. Purgatory will scare up baddies not in your screen, giant spiders will come to your party unannounced and uninvited.

10. Stoneskin is impossible to see on the kid when he has flameskin on, so I keep them at same duration, cast flameskin first then stoneskin, when flameskin is gone, stoneskin is leaving soon, so get ready to cast them both.

11. Burning bone, when begun with purgatory, gives the critters the hiccoughs. Resulting in a slower movement of said critters, and again is highly entertaining.

12. When going through portals to UW, have combos charged and ready. (This is the only time you can't ride, so you're vulnerable.) I have a combo of 4 rings of ice just for the brain suckers in VOT. This gives me time to get over their spell cancelling effects. Just cast the combo as soon as you hit the portal, for a split second, there is nothing in your screen, so nothing will stop the casting. You live to fight another day.

13. When buying ammies, look for defense and resistance. Defense if very important, as important as resistance. But one without the other is like peanut butter without jelly, french fries without catsup, cereal without milk....shoot now I'm hungry....gtg.....hope you enjoyed.

Great post omi, nice info. My fire mage is now at lvl 73 and doing well but found he was struggling a bit so as you said i went and got a horse. What a difference it made for this build:)
As yet he has not got full byleths cause i need to reach lvl 110 to wear the peices i have. can't wait to see burning bone in action. Good idea about the combos too, think i'll give that a try.
I find VOT a bit of a struggle as fire spiral is too wide for the narrow passages, i tend to herd them up and run for a junction before casting. How do you cope in VOT omi? I've tried pugatory but doesn't kill anywhere near as quick as spiral.

Hey Dobs, I think Tips has a bunch of Byleth's stuff for you...check with him. I gave him everything for you when I outgrew them.

VOT is indeed a challenge. I have memorized the spots where the spiral will remain, I cast a ring, then in the distance a purgatory to begin leach. I race my horse right into the middle of the critters with fireskin igniting everything touched. Then I lead them all like the pied piper back to the ring that is still burning, casting several more til everything catches up to me and dies! It's more of a challenge, but is very doable.

#cough# how many years have i been telling everyone to get a horse?! ;)

Sounds like you're having great fun Omi. my BM recently (well about 3 months ago) hit 100, my first char there, and you inspired me to play him again today. He's a RoI/IS mage, he likes to sit in the middle of his RoI whilst everything around him just dies in 2 seconds ;) And today I decided to remove his exp rings (all 71% of them!!!) and start putting split rings in as you suggested. 49% exp and 18% split atm (darn split is hard to find even with 167 trading) and its HUGE fun.

Loads of hugs and thanks for the inspiration Omi!

Re : Fire Sprials too wide for passages.

Cast the Spiral outside the passage, in a clearing.

Use a ranged attack Fireball (or Purgatory) to lure the monsters to you. I call it tickling.

Or pump up waterform to a high level and run by them--heading to the Sakkarra nest... (Since RoI is already there---why not use Waterform too?)

Did I fail to mention this, I can't believe it, I did!

The rocks have magnets in them! While running around splitting the baddies these magnets attract your feet or your sweet horsie's feet. Causing a sudden stop not unlike the slamming of the brakes in your car. So, remember where these obstacles are and steer clear.

Flameskin also resists arrow damage! So, not only does it bring great entertainment, it is also a must have for ranged defense.

Since beginning this build I have noticed that in Zurag Nar the lag has been incredible...effecting others in the game not partied with me. For a while I just stayed away from this area...til today. I think I have discovered a demon in one of the spells which causes this lag. No lag occurs unless I cast purgatory. And not everytime I cast it, only when I cast on the mounted "shadders" (lol, spoken with a slur, this is what Tips calls em). So the value of the exp can still be had, just don't cast purg on those babies!

Did I mention how much fun this guy is? Oh I did, ok, so on with the game!

Too cool Omi.

So, when are you going to write a complete build on him? I am interested in this.

Build of Fire Mage

I have never written one of these before so my style may not be the customary
style. This whole idea was to build a toon based on a set, so it was done
mostly with the mods of the items in mind.

Byleth's Blaze (helm)
Gives bonuses to Magic Lore and meditation and purgatory

Byleth's Vehemence (armor)
Bonus to fire magic, also huge defense and regen spells

Byleth's Pentacle (amulet)
Resistance and mental regen

Byleth's Sparkle (ring)
Bonus to Magic Lore

Byleth's Wall (shield)
Bonus to earth magic, flameskin and huge defense.

Simply put, I took the skills that related to the bonuses:
Fire and Earth magic (points in as often as possible to fire, your choice on
earth, you could use meteor as an alternate spell for this build, I use
purgatory)
Meditation (keep it maxed)
You can take constitution, a nice one to have, trading, riding (I took for added
handling of horse). It's up to you and what you desire to get out of your guy.

Important also, mages are rune eaters, so my goal was to read limited runes
as far as variety. I read the necessary defense buffs: stone skin, flame skin,
and shield wall. The latter is used only in a combo kept as high as possible
with items for making the combo and cast only when going through a portal
you can't ride through.

I've read purgatory and fire spiral for attack spells with ghost meadow as high
as possible to keep regen time down. I've found 1.5 sec regen is perfect for
the spiral. Purgatory is up to you. It's not used often so doesn't have to have
a quick regen. I also read 1 or 2 ring of ice runes so I could use the spell as a
combo when going through the portal to VOT. I have with the aid of items
got a roi at lev 150 which does massive damage and freezes everything around
my guy til he can get on horseback.

I hope this writeup is of some help and not just totally confusing. Have fun.

Unlike most women, I just loathe shopping. And the pocket book empties so fast it's disheartening. So, with the addition of my new mf sword I had an epiphany! (ok so spelling isn't my strong suit)

Anyway, with more than my normal split gear on, and no one else in server to boost exp anyway, I trudged my slow rear to the ghost cave. Letting the bonus of burning bone kill everything slowly (allowing more splits thus more drops)

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y252/NaomiTaylor/uw%20pics/magicfind1.jpg

I filled up my pack with mentors, rings, amis, runes and money in 5 minutes time! I got amulets I'd have shopped for an hour to buy, and some I'd never find at the store. Those that I didn't keep, sold for mucho gold....and I will never shop again! YAY!

Have fun with this!

Here are a few screenies of Byleths kid in action. The third pics shows the lag i was getting from the huge amount of hits they were taking

on the way to the VOTs.

I have a routine I follow when entering the portal to VOT. Cast flameskin, then combo of Ghost meadow, Stoneskin and Shield wall. Upon entering the portal immediatly cast combo of ring of ice. Always works well....this time it didn't.

The only thing that saved me was alt f4. I flashed immediatly on entering and 10 pots later (that's the total pots I carry at any time) I opted to exit.

Praying that I would not find a ghost in Byleth's slot, I entered the game. Whew, he was alive. Upon entering island I took a screenie of what happens when you forget to switch weapons after the casting of flameskin. You see, my sword in slot 4 for flameskin also has a mod called pain....17% even. So everytime a monster touched me I lost all my life (due to flameskin).

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y252/NaomiTaylor/uw%20pics/almostboughtthefarm.jpg

So, I learned to always check which weapon I have selected. A lesson I hope I only have to learn once! (At level 184 it would've been a shame to loose him.)

Today a big birthday party was held in honor of Byleth's Kid to mark his 2 century achievement. In a speech Byleth gave at the gala he thanked all who helped him reach 200! He credited JimmyP's daughter, the vamp, for all the help with supporting his rune addiction and for the unique sword he still uses to this day. "Tho it's antiquated, it still hacks and slashes", said Byleth, "with incredible speed and accuracy." Also mentioned were Ryoki who on several occasions left his Booba on the island for experience and his horse, Fluffy, for always being there and never loosing his unique saddle. Tho they RIP, he also mentioned Slinki the Sakarra for dropping the Frost Weavers staff which brought his ghost meadow up nicely, and Gertrude Ghost's gangly offspring for all the uniques provided during his visits to the ghost cave, including the 2 sneaking rings which brought his split up to 24%. Almost as a post script he also mentioned the RedSkull clan for their inspiration regarding split and it's advisability during battle. And with tears in his eyes, he thanked his grandpappy WizKid for the wisdom he passed on to him regarding the need for StoneSkin and speed. Refreshments were provided by Byleth and his mamma which included mentor potions, concentration potions and health potions which have become a staple for the young mage.

Here's a link to Another Hot Idea, a post I made when I decided to build this little guy.

http://clan-da.com/showthread.php?t=2897

As it stands right now, at level 205 my skills read:

Fire magic 220
Meditation 255 or maxed
Earth magic 109
Magic lore 255 or maxed
Sword lore 12
Trading 41 (with items 255)
Riding 25

My magic find is 717 or 267%
Life leach 42%
Experience gained 95%
Split 24% (from sneaking ring of dead which also gives endurance, speed and exp)

I have to say when I found the Dragon slayers rings I almost sold them, but when socketed they do an amazing amount to his life with phys regen at 94 and 101.

Another nice unique Silas's Ring of Concentrations increases endurance and Magic lore tremendously

My bonuses to Byleth's set in niob are:

Earth magic +14
Fire magic +14
70% damage fire
Burning bone
Open wounds 23%

Runes read are:

Stoneskin 103 (with items 260)
Flameskin 100 (with items 260)
Purgatory 44 (with items 105)
Fire spiral 84 (with items 123)
Ghost Meadow 214 (with items 364)
Of course I read a few ring of ice, fireball and phase shift.

I hope this is the info you were looking for Frosty. :)

Have I expressed how much fun split is? Well, here's a sample of the fun to be had:

Also, just FYI, niobium is NOT dead. Today there were 8 of us blasting the niobium baddies. Got Byleth almost to 215 then lost the field when I ctd'd so called it a day. Perhaps sometime before Christmas he'll get there :)
