battlemage question

I have been messing around with a battlemage lately
its low level and im not sure of what build I want it to be
and im trying to figure out a new way to build him
but the whirlwind spell I think its called the one that reflects arrows and damages enemies around you
is that effective later in the game as well as in the begining
because it has saved me quite a few times from groups of archers
im just wondering if its worth it to keep leveling it up and using it

I would have to say no. I tried using whirlwind but found it to be poor in the long run. Flameskin is better. It's best to choose a single main spell such as ice shards, gust of wind or meteor etc. and then have a secondary spell for mobs(if needed) such as ice ring or fire spiral. These main spells are weak at the start so its best to use a mob spell for the first 10-20 or so lvl's and when you have some better stuff switch to your main attack spell and use the mob spell as backup. Fire spiral and ice ring(with leech)are the easiest spells to use for the starter levels until you decide your main spell. I tend to go with fire(fireball main+fire spiral secondary) for the first 10-15 lvl's as you can find good 1 handed staffs with +fire spell bonus which allows you to use a sheild.
