having not played a BM since sacred + I quite fancy the idea, but not sure what type to go for - i'm stuck between an MS or IS mage.
My last BM was a horse riding IS one which was very powerful and having a horse got over some of the slow movement and armor problems. I've not played a MS mage since pre-plus though...and thats quite appealing to me too.
suggestions?

Why not try a melee mage? Almost no one does that. Not even me.

melee bm are quite fun, there is a specific set that is geared towards melee fighitng, with armor bonus and dmg bonus. Get this most of the wpn bonus is gear towards mental regeneration( i think ti been so long since i played)
in addiiton with earth magic, u can be literaly a rock and focus on ms, which i did because hacking a dragon with sword was never going to be a possibilty, so i need some dmg dealing so powered up ms, and since that was the only magic i needed, it got pretty fun :D
u know mate i think i still have a old bm, but if i log in tonight, i think i may have fogetton my account name and password :%

MS is good fun and hits very hard(when it actually hits). At one of the big patches, not sure which, MS was changed to spread the meteors out more thinly which makes is tough to target them. I've started quite a few but find it frustrating after a while.
Melee bm's are good fun as a challenging build but the worst thing is the really short duration of contract of agility, only 60 secs at max. Casting a buff so often can become a pain:)
The most fun build i've tried has to be the lightning/fireball mage. Keep both spells at about the same lvl and use lightning for mobs and fireball for singles/bosses. It's very effective and one of the blackstaffs set items gives a good boost to lightning strike. Another advantage is that because you have taken air magic you could also use GOW for playing him in the VoT:)
Lightning/fireball is my suggestion Jonny,

MS works best when used as a follow up to a stunning spell such as ROI or GOW. And it's a whole lot easier to target when they don't move so fast. My fave is the horse riding fire mage. Full Byleth's gives burning bone and is a blast to play.
Jon I really can't think of a better BM build than your original IS mage. That was the best BM I have ever seen, I would remake Skeeve The Useless IS BM.

My favorite build that i've seen(actually, my bro was the one using it) is a zapper guy. When you get lightning strike up enough, it jumps to like 10 guys. I really enjoyed watching him. At level 25, he was wiping out all the orc groups by Khorad Nur with one bolt before the orcs even realized they were in danger. He'd see them at the edge of the screen, send off a stream of electrisity and all the orcs were dead.
If you're going for something new, i'd go LS. IS is still an unstopable build, but everyone and their brother(cept my brother) goes IS.

Well i started an MS mage....that quickly died at lvl 8 :p
so i restarted an ice mage but am thinking of going fire and Ice (if i can work out the skills) so that I can have the ring of ice and the ring of fire killing them with IS as a back up

Ring of Ice has been very, very useful for keeping my ice mage alive (Chilly Willy, level 86), especially pre-20. In fact, I'm sure Tipster advocates the use of RoI for all mages!
PS I also have a mage at 22 - Deep Impact, take a wild guess what he does ;) .

actually i must admit to being a little dissapointed with the "new" MS. now they spread it out a bit more its not nearly as much fun, imho

How about a hobbit mage? That would specifically be a Bilbo Baggins Build. ;)
Take waterform and annoy the Lord of the Rings! ;)
